Kaala Sarpa Dosha Parihara at Kodumudi

Recently an astrologer advised me to do a kala sarpa dosha pariharam pooja at Kodumudi, Tamil Nadu. Kodumudi is a small town near Erode - about 40 km east. There is only one train from Bangalore which stops at Kodumudi. All other train and bus options take you to Erode from where you need to take another bus to here. I hired a cab after failed attempts to get confirmed train tickets. In hindsight I am happy that I did take a cab. There are no auto-rickshaws in Kodumudi. At least I did not see any. So cab was helpful to go from hotel to temple and back.

Srirangam is a 2 hour drive from here which I happened to visit on the return journey. Also Namakkal Narasimha temple is another place I visited on the way back.

Kodumudi Magudeswarar Temple:

Kodumudi Magudeswarar temple houses shrines of Lord Shiva, Parvati, Lord Veera Narayana, Lakshmi, and Lord Brahma, mainly. The Narayan deity reclining on the bed of Ananta Shesha is big and  beautiful. Temple is situated on the banks of river Kaveri. Even though we visited during peak summer (12 & 13 May) there was sufficient water flowing. In stark contrast there wasn't a drop of water in Kaveri at Srirangam.

Accommodation/Hotel in Kodumudi:

What is the best place to stay in Kodumudi? Aadvin hotel is a decent place where we stayed in Kodumudi. It is on the main bye-pass road and about a kilometer from the temple. The temple has some lodging arrangement also but I could not get it. Apple Homes seems to be another decent place to stay. One Akash is in charge at Aadvin and his number for booking rooms is 98408 25498.

Kala Sarpa Dosha Pooja Details:

Puja happens in the morning around 7.30 at a designated place inside the compound. Some guide had offered to get my puja done outside the temple before sunrise!😏 Best thing is to consult the temple office or one of the pujaris of the temple a day in advance. If you don't know Tamil, there is one Babu Gurugal who speaks English and who is quite helpful. He is the pujari at the Parvati shrine.

Actually the official fees for Puja seems to be 200/- only, but the pujaris ask dakshina upto 3,500/ or 6,000/-.  I went with 3,500/- puja - done with wheat flour Rahu-Kethu. Puja for 6000/- is with granite stone murtis of Rahu-Kethu. Babu said granite murtis not compulsory.

Kala Sarpa Dosha Pariharam Puja Procedure:

1. Report at the temple to the pujari at 6 am in old clothes (discarded after puja).
2. Take 3 dips in the river.
3. Collect water in Kalashas (available for use near river) for initial puja.
4. Offer garlands (also available for sale) and water to Ganesha murtis etc. near river.
5. There are 2 Ganeshas situated separately beneath 2 trees.
6. 3 pots water per Ganesha and other murtis while circumambulating the tree.
7. Enter the temple, circumambulate Brahma shrine (shami tree) 48 times.
8. Participate in Puja done by the Pujari at the Parihara puja sthala.
9. Recommended to take some cash and your horoscope to the puja. (pujari needs to see)
10. After 1 hr puja, pujari sprinkles puja water on you.
11. Go to river again, discard the flour Rahu-Kethu, and take a dip.
12. Discard old clothes, change to fresh, enter temple and visit the Deities. Get Archana done.

After presenting dakshina to the archaka, you are free to eat and go back. On the way back, you may visit any temples, but it is not recommended to visit anyone else's homes.

Pujari referred by Babu to me: Gowrishankar Iyer: 99940 77882.

A few meters from the main temple is located another important temple: that of Goddess Malaiamman. The legendary poet Kalidasa is said to have received enlightenment/education from the Goddess at this temple.

  5. Thanks. Your post was helpful. I went to this place yesterday (2 Oct 2022). Wear old clothes while going and have another set of clothes to change while returning. Two days before, I contacted pusari via phone call. He asked me to be there at 7 30 am. On that day. I was asked to take 3 dips in the river. I was told to fill kudam(vessel) with water, pour and walk around Ganesha 6 times. I have to repeat this for second Ganesha for 6 more times. then sprinkled tumeric powder and kunguma powder in Raghu kedhu gods and lit deepas for them. Then i walked around Brahma sannidhi 12 times and had to sit there for few minutes. Next went to another area where pusari had prepared everything for Pooja. He chanted mantra and asked me to repeat few of those. Then i tied knot to Small Banana sapling. Then had to broke the sapling into two pieces. Then I carried the sapling along with Raghu kedhu made of dough to the river. Threw the sapling in river first and then dissolved the Raghu kedhu with hands. Then 3 dips in the river and abandoned my current clothes and change to new one which I had. There are clothe sellers near the river bank itself including underwear. Lastly I had to do archanai on my name to Mahudeshwarar god.
5000Rs for pusari (3000rs also available but less tasks). Entry fee charge, parking charges, rental fee for kudam, garlands, tumeric, kungumam powder, deepas, archanai, etc., Totally around 6000Rs. There are few restaurants beside the temple itself. The temple is well maintained.
